Length of stay
Preference will be given to Boren Scholarship applications involving study for a full academic year. It is our experience that students who study abroad for a full year maximize their language learning progress and gain a deeper cultural understanding of their host country.
All applicants may also apply for a semester program.
Summer-only programs are limited to freshmen, sophomores, and applied science and engineering majors regardless of class standing.
Applications for summer-only programs will only be considered if the program is eight (8) weeks or longer and is designed as a “language immersion” program.
For purposes of eligibility, the freshman and sophomore academic year includes the summer of 2008. Seniors may apply for Boren Scholarships, provided they will not graduate from their home institutions before or during the period of study abroad.
Split the year between two programs
You may split the academic year between two study abroad programs in the same country if no satisfactory full year program is available. In this case, please submit two separate applications. Only one set of transcripts and one set of recommendations are required. Please contact us for further details.
Applications for two different consecutive study abroad programs should entail study in the same country and of the same language. Applicants proposing study in two different countries and/or for two different languages will not receive Boren Scholarships.
Successful applicants for study on two programs in the past have included:
- two separate semester-long study abroad programs in Vietnam, one in Hanoi and one in Ho Chi Minh City
- two separate semester-long study abroad programs in China, one in Beijing and one in Shanghai
- a summer intensive language program in Russia followed by a fall semester program of coursework in Russian.
Note: When two applications are submitted because one yearlong program is unavailable, the combined applications will be considered together and be given yearlong preference, provided that the combined length of study is over six months.
