The Boren Scholarship is not a "study abroad program" in the sense we'll be using the term on the website. Rather, it provides financial support for a study abroad program you choose.

There are many types of study abroad programs, and we divide them into five broad categories, listed below.

1. U.S. Institution with Its Own Program

Many study abroad programs are offered through U.S. colleges and universities. Students enroll in programs organized by their own or another university. When applying for Boren funding to cover this kind of program you must select the school name for the sponsor category on the Boren Scholarship application.

+ Application example

Sponsor: State University
Program Name: State University in Prague

2. U.S. College/University Consortium Program

Some U.S. institutions work collaboratively to offer programs for students attending a number of different colleges or universities. When applying for these programs, you must select the consortium name for the sponsor category on the Boren Scholarship application.

+ Application example

Sponsor: Consortium of Southern Colleges
Program Name: Language and Culture Program at Moscow State University

3. Foreign University with Its Own Program

Many foreign universities have established programs for international students. If the foreign university has a special program structure in place for foreign students, IIE/NSEP does not consider the program to be direct enrollment, and does not require accompanying letters of support. When applying for programs of this nature, you should select the name of the foreign university as the sponsoring organization on the Boren Scholarship application.

+ Application example

Sponsor: American University in Cairo
Program Name: Arabic Language Unit

4. Study Abroad Organizations or Third Party Providers

Study abroad organizations are independent organizations providing programs for students interested in particular fields of study and countries. When applying for these types of programs, please select the organization name as the sponsor on the Boren Scholarship application.

+ Application example

Sponsor: Study Abroad Organization
Program Name: Yunnan Province, Language and Cultures

5. Individually arranged study

IIE/NSEP anticipates that few scholarships for individually arranged study will be granted.

This option is available only to juniors and seniors.

There are two types of individually arranged study. These two types of individually arranged study require letters of support from both the home and foreign institution to supplement the Boren Scholarship application.

  • Direct enrollment in a foreign institution

Some students are interested in direct enrollment at universities that do not have programs in place to support foreign students. If you are interested in this option, you should thoroughly investigate all foreign university and language requirements. Typically, students who choose direct enrollment are at an advanced level of language proficiency and are able to take university courses with local students.

+ Application example

Sponsor: Harbin Normal University
Program Name: Direct Enrollment. (You may need to call IIE/NSEP at 1-800-618-6737 to have the direct enrollment option added to the application drop-down menu.)
  • Individually arranged supervised study

Advanced students with strong language skills are eligible to apply for Boren funding to cover individual study projects abroad. The students should formulate their proposals in conjunction with both an academic advisor at their home campus and at least one university professor at the foreign institution.

Sponsor: National Taiwan University
Program Name: Genotypes of the Hepatitis B Virus in Taiwan

Alternatively, you can select the name of your home institution as the sponsor and designate your program name as "Independent Study."

Sponsor: State University
Program Name: Independent Study

Applications involving direct foreign university enrollment or individually arranged supervised study will be judged on their feasibility and on each student’s ability to succeed in the proposed situation.
