SHAPE YOUR PLAN
Overview
A Boren Scholarship is a source of portable financial assistance that can be used to support study abroad through an established program. In limited cases, it also supports direct enrollment in a foreign university or individually arranged supervised study.
Your campus representative or study abroad advisor will help guide you through the process of choosing a program. Make sure you discuss your university's policy about academic credit for the specific program you're choosing.
Make your choices based on the overall quality of the program, the strength of the language instruction, and on other elements it offers that will enhance your study abroad experience. On this site, we provide information to help you evaluate the language component of a study abroad program, the aspect we're most concerned with.
There are no lists of preferred programs nor do we endorse programs under a particular institution, organization, or group’s sponsorship.
There are a number of resources available to you when selecting a study abroad program. To start, most students consult their campus study abroad office. The Institute of International Education has several resources, including a helpful website, http://www.iiepassport.org and two publications—Academic Year Abroad and Short-Term Study Abroad—which you will likely find in your campus library or international study office.
Remember as you develop your plan that preference is given to students who will study countries, languages, and fields identified as critical to U.S. national security. Students who will study abroad for a full academic year and who will make a commitment to a career in federal service also have preference.
