Boren Scholar Federal Internship Awards

The National Security Education Program offers students who have completed their study as a Boren Scholar up to $2000 in support for non-paying or low-paying internships with the federal government. (We define those as internships that pay less than $500 per month).

This grant of up to $500 per month for up to four months will provide partial coverage for travel and living expenses but will not provide salary.

Internships must be with Boren-approved federal agencies or offices. See this page for details.

Boren Scholars interested in applying for a Boren Scholar Federal Internship Award must submit an application form (pdf) and complete a one-page essay.

In the essay, you'll be asked to describe:

  1. The type of internship you are seeking (federal agency, specific duties);
  2. Reasons for pursuing an internship, including how it relates to your study abroad experience and overall academic curriculum, how it relates to the U.S. national security goals of the NSEP, and how you will use the support provided by a Federal Internship Award;
  3. How the internship will help meet your professional goals.

Please note the schedule of application deadlines; awards will not be made retroactively.

Summer Internships
(Internships which start between May-August 2007)
Deadline: April 13, 2007

Fall Internships
(Internships which start between September-December 2007)
Deadline: August 17, 2007

Spring Internships
(Internships which start between January-April 2008)

The National Security Education Program Office and the NSEP Group of Advisors review applications. Decisions will be based on the applicant’s demonstration of commitment to the internship experience and the relationship of the internship to the applicant’s professional and career goals.

Preference will be given to applicants who intend to use the internship to begin a career in the federal government.

The number of awards each year depends on the availability of funding. Scholars may only receive one internship award, and may not defer or extend the award.
