HOW TO APPLY
Gather the documentation you'll need
reference letters
Two references are required; you may submit a third. At least two of them should be from professors at your current school. Here is what they will be asked to talk about:
“Please comment specifically on the applicant’s motivation, emotional maturity and stability, self-reliance and independence, academic abilities and professional goals as they relate to the study abroad proposal.
“Please pay particular attention to the candidate’s ability to relate his/her study abroad proposal to NSEP’s mission to build international competence among U.S. undergraduates who are planning international careers.
“Your impressions of the student’s ability to adapt to a different cultural environment, his/her linguistic preparation, and any other factors which you believe may have a bearing on the candidate’s successful experience abroad would also be useful.”
Reference form and further instructions are attached here as a pdf document. These will go with other materials to the campus representative.
Official Transcripts
Send for official transcripts from all colleges and universities you've attended. Freshmen must also include high school transcripts. Have these sent to the campus representative.
Program Information
Collect and give to the campus representative either:
One page study abroad program descriptions with cost information for every program and alternate program you’re applying to (this may be a photocopy of part of a brochure or a page from the provider’s website)
ORLetters of support for direct enrollment and individually arranged study
Make sure all supplementary material is clearly labeled with your name and will arrive well before the applicable deadline.
All documentation should be given to the campus representative, who will forward it to the Boren Scholarship office in Washington. If your campus does not have a representative, we may ask you to submit the materials to another campus contact or directly to us at:
