HOW TO APPLY
Prepare a budget
Boren Scholarships provide support for overseas study. The maximum period of study is one year; the minimum period of study is 8 weeks. In the 2008-2009 cycle of applications, Boren funding can begin no earlier than summer 2008 and must begin no later than spring 2009.
Awards for overseas study are based on the cost of your organized study abroad program and provide a maximum of
$20,000 per year
$10,000 per semester
$8,000 per summer (available only in very limited circumstances)
Expenses for dependents are not covered. Use these guidelines to develop your budget. All amounts should be given in U.S. dollars.
As part of the application process, you'll be asked to disclose any existing financial aid. Boren Scholarship amounts are based on the cost of your program minus any grants or other scholarships up to the maximum amount available.
By the way, you may not accept paid work while you are on a Boren Scholarship.
Budget Breakdown
Here are the categories you'll be asked about in the online application:
- Cost of tuition and fees
- Cost of room and board
- Cost of round-trip international airfare on U.S. flag carrier
- Cost of books, insurance & local transportation
(local transportation is travel between home and classes)
Details
As you can see, the cost of your specific study abroad program will determine the overall cost of your semester or year abroad. Our application asks for more detail than your program may provide, so you will need to contact the study abroad program to determine the costs of such items as tuition, and room and board.
Your program can also give an estimate for the cost of required books.
Limited in-country travel is acceptable if it is directly related to the academic program of study abroad. Applications should reflect anticipated travel requirements within the identified country. Study tours of several countries are not acceptable as study abroad proposals.
You will submit a more detailed budget if you are selected for an award, so an estimate is acceptable for the application.
Fly America Act
The estimate for transportation to and from your host country must be for a U.S. carrier due to the provisions of the Fly America Act.
All Boren Scholarship recipients must conform to the Fly America Act, which requires that all air travel supported by federal government funds be on American flag carriers departing from the United States to the foreign destination and returning to the United States, and on all internal foreign flights where such service is available. All scholarship recipients will be required to send a photocopy of the passenger receipt page(s) of their airline ticket to show compliance with the Fly America Act.
To obtain an estimate for airfare expenses visit an online travel site, or the website of a U.S. carrier, and enter your prospective travel destinations and dates. Where possible, check you information with a second source.
