HOW TO APPLY
Overview
We’re suggesting an approach to your application that takes you through the process in an order that has worked for previous successful applicants. Download the application completion checklist [pdf] to help guide you and make sure you’re completing each task.
If you would like a printed summary of the opportunities and obligations that go with a Boren Scholarship, you can download our Fact Sheet.
Review the Boren scholarship application cycle and deadlines. The national deadline for the 2007-2008 academic year, February 13, 2007, has passed. Please check back here for the deadlines for 2008-2009. Your campus will almost certainly have an earlier deadline than the national deadline.
We want you to know exactly how your application will be considered, so we've included the criteria that will be used to evaluate you.
Gather your documentation
- Two letters of reference (you may submit 3).
- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities you’ve attended. Freshmen must also include high school transcripts.
- Program descriptions with cost information for the primary and alternate programs to which you’re applying, OR letters of support for direct enrollment and individually arranged study.
Full details on these requirements is in the gather documentation tab at right.

Now you're ready to complete and submit the online application. First check it over, then print out a copy for your records. When you click "submit" it goes to your campus representative, who may suggest ways to revise and strengthen the application. From there, it goes to the Boren Scholarship office in Washington. Make sure you’re done well in advance of your on-campus deadline. Full instructions for the application are here.
