Essay guidelines

You'll want to work on these essays in a word processing program, and then cut and paste them into the online application at the right time.

All applicants will complete three essays and a short program abstract. Essays one and two should be no longer than the equivalent of two single-spaced pages using a 12 pt. font. Essay three should be no longer than the equivalent of one single-spaced page using a 12 pt. font.

Students interested in applying for a Bridge Award from the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) must complete essay four as well. Essay four should also be the equivalent of one single-spaced page using a 12 pt. font. While you're researching the Bridge Award, make sure to read about NBR's mission, since your own work must be related to the organization's goals and program areas for you to be competitive for this award.

Program abstract

Sum up your proposed study plan in 150 words.

Essay 1

Describe in detail the program of study for which you are requesting a Boren Fellowship, including specific plans for domestic and/or overseas study, and other compelling and significant features of your proposal. If you are requesting support for domestic study only, be sure to provide an explanation of the reason you are unable to study outside of the United States.

Essay 2

Explain the significance of your selected region, language, and culture to your academic field, to the nation's security, and to your career goals and personal development.

Essay 3

Describe your specific goals for language study, including the proficiency level you hope to attain and how you plan to develop your language skills to that level.

Essay 4 (Bridge Award Applicants only)

Describe in detail your interest in working as a research associate for the National Bureau for Asian Research (NBR). Identify which program at NBR you would be most interested in working with, and explain how your work in that program will fit your experiences and interests. Discuss how the NBR experience will contribute to your long and short-term career plans, and explain how you will continue your language development during the period of the Bridge Award.
